Water maintenance with salt water plants
Salt plants are a not unpopular variant of water purification. The proponents of salt water disinfection have a lot to offer:
- The water feels much softer compared to chlorine tablet water.
- Salt is much cheaper compared to chlorine products. The costs are reduced by approx. 50 % per year. The investment in a salt plant therefore pays for itself relatively soon.
- There is no smell of chlorine.
- The maintenance is automated through the use of a salt system
So far so good.
Functionality of salt plants
Now it gets scientific:
The water in your swim spa or hot tub is very salty due to the addition of salt. This salt is now split by means of electricity. Hydrogen and sodium then collect at one pole. Chlorine with oxygen collects at the other pole.
Sodium is very reactive and forms sodium hydroxide with the water. This sodium hydroxide in turn reacts with the chlorine and sodium hypochlorite is formed. This in turn is responsible for disinfecting the pool because it fights micro-organisms.
In the pool, this compound releases the oxygen by oxidation and salt is again formed. This is called a closed system, because salt is split but also rebuilt.
Salt water disinfection - An alternative, but not without risks for your hot tub or swim spa
Salt water corrodes easily. No more than chlorinated water, but no less. A salt system is therefore only recommended for plastic components. All other parts will rust after a short time. Even ladders made of stainless steel must be cleaned regularly with chrome cleaning agents. A zinc disk, which is attached to the ladder, can help provisionally against rust formation.
